Neil Down - Answered a Question by tucker (07 Aug 07 14:41)

Most ships have no or little concession to their smoking policies yet. It might happen sometime in the future. Cigarette smoking is generally allowed in certain areas in the ships, now thankfully with the exception of restaurants and cafeteria. There was talk about banning smoking in cabins but to date I don't know of any ships except Azamara Quest and Journey that are putting that into effect. There may be others following suit. So there you are, love it or loath it, things will change but it will not be rapid and this is surprising considering that America has some very stringent rules about smoking and most ships are American owned. I understood that while a ship was docked in Britain it was subject to the same smoking legislation as say a pub opposite the terminal. Once out at sea they are able to do what they want.

Ships, especially US ones don't take any notice of the UK smoking ban. On the Infinity in March, one side of the pool area was smoking, the other not, so if you are a non-smoker & wanted to be on the sunny (smoking) side, tough! Even in the disco Bar at the Edge of the World, one side yes, etc. Arrive late & the only seats avalable are in the smoking side. I did see a large Carnival ship a couple of years back with a large no-smoking sign on its side.
